I happy to announce the final release of jNetMap 0.5!
All known bugs of the 0.5-RC2 version should have been fixed and all planned features have been implemented.

Upcoming features for 0.6 (probably):
- DHCP Support (auto-detect changed addresses)
- Reports, Summaries & Statistics
- Improved image-export
- Automatic reports via Email
- ...your suggestions...
This might take a while (~Q4), as I'm currently busy writing my Bachelor-Thesis...

Know some Java? Wanna help? Drop me a line or write your own plugin!

Every now and again, I'm bored with my current projects. So when I find something small that could do with a little implrovement, I'll spend a few hours on that, an then return to my projects. This also works when you're stuck somewhere. Put it aside and do something else, then pick it up again.

Today: RadioRec+ - "Listen and record various swiss radio stations", which needed a face lift:

Random Acts of Programming: Boxee-App for Jupiter Broadcasting

Another "Random Act of Programming", this time for Jupiter Broadcasting. These guys do a fantastic job, I watch more JB than anything else these days. Also, I started to play around with Boxee recently, and saw that JB wasn't on there. So I thought I'd change that. ;-)

It's not available yet, but the guys over at JB seem excited about it and hopefully it will be published soon.

Update: Chris made a cool teaser-video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBa6UGRQ_a8

syno-indicator: App-Indicator for you Synology NAS

So, I'm trying to get into Python/GTK. Also, I haven't been satisfied with the Firefox-Addons for Synology Diskstations. And I use Ubuntu. So obviously, I had to write an App-Indicator for said NAS:

syno-indicator: Provides an App-Indicator for you Synology NAS. Add links and torrents, see download progress, auto-add torrents from a folder. Only useful if your platform supports App-Indicators and you own a Synology NAS!

Update: Version 0.2 released, adds "details"-dialog

Jupiter Broadcasting Boxee-App update: DIY

$

I just heard from Chris that the Boxee guys rejected the Jupiter Broadcasting App, as it is 'just' a compilation of RSS-Feeds. This is retarded for a multitude of reasons. All content-providing Boxee Apps are, by necessity, RSS-based. Some have a skin (such as the Rev3 App), others are exactly the same as the one I created (CNET's App for example), namely just a bunch of RSS-Feeds that Boxee's engine will display in a list. So it's ok if CNET uses the built-in RSS-reader, but not when others do???

So thanks to the Boxee guys you'll have to install it manually instead of being able to install it from the repo. Very convenient. -.-

  1. Download the ZIP-File
  2. Extract it to ~/.boxee/UserData/apps (on Linux, others see here)
  3. (Re-) Start Boxee

I'm not sure if this is possible on a Boxee-Box, but if you've built the box yourself, it works just fine.

Jupiter Broadcasting Bookmarklet for Amazon

Outdated, use the extensions for Firefox, Chrome

Did you know that Jupiter Broadcasting is an Amazon affiliate? You can add the parameter tag=thelinactsho-20 to any Amazon product URL and JB will receive a little kickback. But this is cumbersome. So I built a bookmarklet that does the work for you:

JB Amazon

Drag the above link into you "Bookmarks Toolbar" and click it when you shop at Amazon.

  • unfoldable, zoomable graphs
  • sortable table

What d'ya think?

jNetMap: Slow development

Ever yince I stared to work as a Software Engineer back in December of 2011, jNetMap development has been very slow. That's because the last thing you'll do after a day of coding is write more code. In other words, it's not dead - but is is hibernating.

Soooo... if you wanna help out - feel free to contact me ;-)

PortProbe

Just did this for an assignment in school. The objective was to create a simple GUI for scanning common ports on any IP and report on their status. I went for the overkill and implemented more features and a multithreading GUI for progress analytics.
So have a look at PortProbe.

Update: added full HTML output and the ability to cancel a running scan.

Poker (sort of)

This is a project that I worked on until recently. It tries to quickly evaluate a poker hand, using some hex kung-fu.
Feel free to do whatever you whant with this code, as I currently do not have the time to persue this any further (for the time beeing, anyway...)

HD coaster

There are many things you can do with a dead hard drive. A stylish coaster is one of them:

Use some double-faced adhesive tape to hold the individual platters in place - that's it.

USB Battery Pack

After watching Systm Episode 86, I decided to build the second version of the USB Battery Pack. This is, as David has pointed out, not the best way of charging a USB device, as it simply relies on a 7805 Voltage Regulator. But I had one lying around, so I decided to go with this version.

I used an altoids-maxi-tin, which left me with enough space to fit an iPod cable in as well.

Rules for stumbling

Being a StumbleUpon-addict myself, I decided to share some rules for voting:

The Thumb goes down if:

  • it's for/from Micro$oft.
  • a Motifake repeats the text in the picture.
  • it's a Motifake that was originally a LOLCAT.
  • it throws a JS Popup asking me to subscribe to their newsletter.
  • it tells me how to search Google.
  • it's an iPhone-App.
  • it's about software and features the word "buy" on the page.
  • it's about WEP-cracking. Again.
  • it's an antivirus/spyware/adware scanner. Why should I care how to fix the worst OS on this planet?
  • it is more insulting/racist than it is funny.
  • it's about Photoshop.
  • it's a generic "parked domain" site with that stupid smiling girl on it.
  • advertises the newest cellphone/laptop.
  • the first comment on the page is "FIRST!!!!!11ONEONE" or similar.

The Thumb goes up if:

  • it's an open source project.
  • it's an XKCD.
  • it's a new scientific discovery.
  • it's a useful shell-trick.
  • I lol'd.
  • it's about Ubuntu/Debian.
  • an atheist epicaly pwns a theist.

I don't vote if: (aka "meh")

  • it's about KDE.
  • it's about Mandriva/SuSE/RedHat
  • it's kinda funny but old.
  • it's a video of a faceplant or similar.

Avoider Game

$

As part of the lecture, we developed a small JApplet game. I decided to create an avoider.

Rules:

  • don't toch the wall
  • don't touch the red circles
  • circles will bounce off the walls and each other
  • circles will grow over time
  • catch the green circle to reduce the size of the circles and gain 3 seconds of shield power
  • the shield will protect you from all threats
  • you have 3 seconds of shield power for an easy start

» Open the game in a new window

» Download the source

I also wrote my own "collision detection" for the game, as there is no intersect method for ovals:
let's call our circles a and b:
If sqrt((bx-ax)²+(by-ay)²) < (a.radius + b.radius), then a and b are colliding.
The collision is only 1D, without friction etc., so I just swap the velocity-vectors of the circles.
